You have probably heard of SpiralFrog, the establishment music industry’s answer to free music downloads. What a cookie name for a bunch of suits to come up with. They probably thought it was cool. But then they probably thought most of the dumb ideas they came up with for SpiralFrog were cool ideas. NOT! Who wants to be forced to look at a whole of ads every time they listen to free music downloads? The ads are not even music-related. Who wants downloads to disappear into the ether if they don’t visit the site at least once every thirty days? Who wants to battle with bugs and endure continual download pain? Who wants a paltry 800 000 tracks and 3 500 music videos to choose from with no room for new music discovery? (This site is backed by EMI, UMG and the like and the RIAA digs it.) Who wants to download music they can’t play on iPods, iPhones, Zunes or any Apple computer? PLEASE! I have to say that iTunes is a lot better because even though it is far from a free download site, at least it is compatible with the young, happening media i.e. iPods, iPhones, Zunes and Macs. So hop away from SpiralFrog, is my advise, and take a flying (or should I say filing) leap into Ares Ultra P2P filesharing software which gets you back to the good old days of Napster, with over 100 million tracks to savor, search and discover. That’s more like it. I opt for Ares Lite free music downloads at the moment, and it’s all legal. Open source software and a P2P filesharing protocol make this a resource communally “owned” by everyone who uses it. Hop, skip or jump, but get there.
